5th Annual Nature Island Literary Festival
The 5th annual Nature Island Literary Festival and Book fair saw a massive turnout on Friday August 10th. In a country where relatively few writers existed, it is a huge accomplishment for Dominica.
The festival’s Director, Dr. Alwin Bully says the mission statement has been to promote the literary arts as viable creative industries and valid career choices for our people.
Minister for Tourism, Honourable Ian Douglas, welcomed all writers and visitors to Dominica, and says Dominica inspires a strong passion and is a great starting point for those involved in the literary arts.
He says the festival brings our Caribbean brothers and sisters together to provide a unique opportunity to promote our common roots and heritage and share a common vision.
The Tourism Minister wants the festival to become an even greater event on our calendar and grow into a tourism product like the World Creole Music Festival.
Keynote speaker at the festival, Professor George Lamming from Barbados, has produced short prose pieces which have been broadcast on BBC’s Caribbean Voices.
He says one of the most important functions of the arts and cultural activity has to do with the education of feeling and he thinks this is one of our most dangerous omissions.
