Acting Minister of Health Urging Dominicans to Stay Away from Tobacco!
Acting Minister of Health Honourable Colin McIntyre is urging Dominicans to refrain from using tobacco.
This very important message came on the heels of observing the annual World No Tobacco Day, held on May 31st. Its aim is to protect present and future generations, from the devastating health consequences of this drug.
It also highlights the social, environmental and economic effects of tobacco use.
Mr. McIntyre noted, six in every ten secondary school students are exposed to second hand smoke which increases the risk for early development of chronic non-communicable diseases.
He suggested, Governments have to work harder to create stricter policies, laws and regulations surrounding tobacco use and production, focusing on limiting the promotion of its products.
The packaging of tobacco products can mislead the harmful effects of tobacco, reduce the effectiveness of health promotion, and increase the appeal of the product to young people.
He went on to say that Dominicans should get involved in the call to reduce the harmful use and effects of tobacco use and tobacco smoke.
