Benta Nine captures the 2011 Dominica State Prison Calypso Monarch crown

Oliver Benta who goes by the stage name of ‘Benta Nine’ singing two songs entitled ‘struggling children’ and ‘change’ successfully dethroned three-time calypso king ‘De Charma’ to capture the 2011 Dominica State Prison calypso soca monarch title on Saturday.


The event which was carried live by SAT Telecommunications Ltd was organized by prison officers at the Dominica State Prison and featured eight calypsonians, who sang two songs each.


Lawrence ‘De Charma’ Ferrol singing ‘take a turn’ and ‘practice’ came in second while Shelton ‘Color Blind’ Hamilton singing ‘political blunder’ and ‘ready to take a stand’ came in third and haitian national Richmond ‘De Erncy’ Ernest singing ‘mad world’ and ‘they are liars’ came in fourth place.


The other competitors were Raymond ‘Dot Parallel’ Sustrie, Sharles ‘De Preacher’ Lecointe, Shadrack ‘De Spectacular’ Valerie and Carlton ‘De Hawk’ Gregoire.
