Black Sigatoka Consultation
Development of an integrated Programme and Action Plan is currently in progress for Black Sigatoka Disease Management in the Commonwealth of Dominica.
Permanent Secretary of Agriculture and Chairman Mr. Samuel Carette says Black Sigatoka is a very dangerous disease.
Mr. Carette stated that we have had Yellow Sigatoka and so far it has been manageable however, Black Sigatoka is way more violent.
He believes an integrated approach needs to be taken in order to manage this vile disease.
He went on to say that this is a very expensive and engaging exercise however, the process has already begun.
Mr. Samuel says our country has lovely plantains and bananas and we need to preserve it.
SLC Plant Production and Protection Officer Dr. Vyiayanthi Lopez says 5 countries are involved in the regional project and an expert from Cuba specialized in plant protection diseases will be working with the,.
On the 20th and the 21st of September, 2 persons from each Caribbean country affected by Black Sigatoka will represent their country in Barbados to discuss the action plan.
Ms. Lopez says that Cuba has also battled with this problem, so this can be resolved.
Minister of Agriculture Honorable Matthew Walter says Black Sigatoka is a major threat to our crops which happens to be vital to our country.
