Canadians Leave Top Police Posts in Trinidad and Tobago

Commissioner of Police- Dwayne Gibbs

Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs and Deputy Commissioner of Police Jack Ewatski, both Canadian nationals recruited in 2010, have tendered their resignations to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Commission (PSC) effective August 7, 2012.

According to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the PSC has met and considered the resignations, and is engaged in the process of appointing persons to fill the vacancies that have been created by the resignations of the two officers.

In a joint statement, Gibbs and Ewatski said their decision to leave was based on their own personal reasons.

They are happy to be able to put certain measures in place, which they hope will continue to make the public of Trinidad and Tobago feel safer and secure.
The two officers cited a 25 per cent reduction in homicides, as well as recent measures such as the creation of a professional standards unit to deal with corruption-related issues within the police force.
