Cancer Society Host Because We Care Celebration
On Friday April 11th, The Dominica Cancer Society hosted its first ‘Because We Care Celebration’ bringing together cancer patients and their supporters at the Windsor Park Stadium.
This event was held in an effort to raise funds towards the maintenance of the new CT Scanner at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).
Speaking at the event, President of the Dominica Cancer Society, Ms. Kathleen Cornelius noted that cancer is on the increase.
She noted, one of the major issues the Society faces is persons diagnosed with the disease not coming forward, as they simply cannot afford the cost of cancer treatment.
Too many individuals are being diagnosed in the later stages of the disease which does not help in the fight against it.
Ms. Cornelius added that the public’s support for persons diagnosed with cancer is vital to help them along the difficult journey.
Minister of Health, Honourable Julius Timothy, expressed thanks to the Cancer Society for hosting such an event to aid in the fight against cancer.
He also highlighted the new equipment at the PMH which will aid in the early detection of cancer in patients.
Mr. Timothy noted that the business community’s investment in the Dominica Cancer Society is definitely an investment in health.
The Minister also applauded the Cancer Society’s efforts to aid in health initiatives, which pave the way for direct action to address the health needs of our population.
