Child Abuse Awareness Week described as a success

Coordinator of the Child Abuse Prevention Unit, Ms Jemma Azille has described a week of activities observing child abuse awareness week, in Dominica as a success.

Activities for that week included workshops with church leaders, school teachers and the media surrounding the theme: ‘there is no excuse for child abuse, save the nation’s children’.

Ms Azille says the social welfare division is confident that they met the objective of creating greater awareness on the issue of child abuse.

Another major highlight for child abuse awareness week was a workshop for media practitioners, which was facilitated by child protection specialists Ms Heather Stewart and Mrs Lisa Mcclean-Trotman.

During the workshop media representatives in Dominica deliberated on the topic ‘media as advocates for children’.

Ms Azille says the role of the media is critical as it relates to prevention, which is a major challenge for the social welfare division.

According to the 2010 report released by the Social Welfare Division, child abuse is on a rise in Dominica, especially cases of child sexual abuse and neglect.

Ms Azille says the government of Dominica will be partnering with the Social Welfare Division to develop a strategic plan to address the issue.

The division is soliciting the support of the general public in addressing the issue by reporting suspected cases of child abuse to child protection agencies.
