Clarence Joseph of Layou is Dominica’s newest centenarian
Residents of the community of Layou congregated at the Christian Union Mission Church on Saturday March 19th, 2011 to celebrate the life of Clarence Joseph of Layou as he celebrated his 100th birthday.
Joseph, who is the latest individual to join Dominica’s growing list of centenarians was showered with gifts and words of encouragement by family members as well as government officials and villagers from the community of Layou, during the hour long thanksgiving ceremony.
Chairman of the Dominica Council on Ageing, Mr. Evander Joseph extended warm greetings to the centenarian on behalf of the Board members and staff of the association, which is the umbrella body for all senior citizens group across the island.
Parliamentary Representative for the area, Honourable Kelver Darroux congratulated Mr. Joseph on his remarkable achievement.
Mr. Darroux used the opportunity to encourage the youth in his constituency and Dominica by extension, to emulate the lives and actions of the senior citizens such as Mr. Joseph, since there are many benefits that can be derived from doing so.
Minister of Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs Honourable Gloria Shillingford told the villagers that they should feel blessed to have an honored person of 100 years within their midst, as she thanked the Prime Minister of Dominica Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit for his foresight in initiating the ‘Yes We Care’ programme.
