Close of the 2011 criminal assizes
A call has been made for more lawyers to volunteer in assisting with criminal matters at the courts in Dominica.
This call was made by Judge Birnie Stephenson Brookes, while she addressed the close of the 2011 criminal assizes at the Roseau High Court.
According to Justice Brookes, many individuals who come to the courts for trial cannot afford a lawyer, and very few lawyers have been offering their assistance.
She added that cases like these put the judge in a position where they are forced to play two roles, one as a judge, and the other as an advocate for the defendant.
In the interim, during his report to the High Court, Chief Prison Officer, Rafael Cartin disclosed that there are 256 inmates at the institution; 251 males and 5 females.
He also reported that there are four escaped prisoners on the loose.
There are 57 males and 3 females on remand, including 6 juveniles.
