One bus driver will have to work round the clock, to pay the court after being fined for possession of cannabis, by Roseau magistrate Evalina Jno Baptiste, when he pled guilty.

According to the facts of the case read by, police prosecutor inspector Claude weeks, at 9:40 pm on February 3rd, the police task force who was on patrol in the fond Cole area.

35 year old Cheddy Joseph of Fondcole, was observed going to roll cannabis in a wrapper.

In searching Mr. Joseph, officers found 36 small clear plastic bags in his left front pocket, with what looked like cannabis.

When questioned about the substance, Mr. Joseph said; and i quote, “some weed i have there”, end quote.

He was then cautioned and arrested.

The substance tested positive for cannabis, with a quantity of 40 grams.

In mitigation, attorney at law Wayne Norde, who represented the defendant argued for a non custodial sentence for his client.

Mr. Norde stated, his client is a father of 10 children who are dependent on him, and is a first time offender, who did not waste the court’s time by pleading guilty.

He went on to say his client is not involved in the drug trade, and that he found the cannabis on the playing field, which he placed in his pocket.

However this was not enough to persuade the magistrate, as she said she does not believe that Mr. Joseph found the cannabis, since it was so well packaged for re-sale, which means it was not for personal use.

Mr. Joseph was fined $2500 for the charge of possession with intent to supply, to be paid by May 31st or in default spend 6 months in prison.

He was also fined $1000 for possession of cannabis, to be paid by the above date, or in default spend 5 months in prison.
