Curacao Government Monitoring Oil Spill

The government of Curacao is closely monitoring the situation surrounding an oil spill by Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA from the Isla Refinery.

Premier Gerrit Schotte wants environmental rules revised because of the incident, and says he regrets the incident and has indicated that it must never happen again.

The prime minister has also contacted PDVSA in order to receive clarification of the situation, while the Isla Refinery has launched an investigation into the cause of the oil spill.

Peter Van Van Leeuwen, chairman of Clean Environment Curacao Foundation said they have recognized that it came from a tanker with crude oil docked at Bullen Bay, and the tanker was probably not docked the correct way by which it emptied the oil into the water.
