DABA League Opens

President of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA) Mr. Mickey Joseph is urging Dominicans to come out and support the DABA’s 2012 Playoffs.

The playoffs which commenced on Wednesday August 8th at the Lindo Park hard court in Goodwill will see the participation of 16 teams island-wide.

Mr. Joseph says that most of the games will be played at the Lindo Park since this is the only court with the new markings since changes were made in the revision of the DABA’s rules for 2012.

Some of teams participating are; E.H Crossovers, Police Sports Club, Massacre Black Hawks, Kelvar Darroux Hurricanes, Gatorade Blazers, Maggz Magnificos and Doctor Mac Prowlers amongst others.

He added that the league had to begin in June but due to difficulty in securing a venue, it was pushed back to August.

Mr. Joseph says although they have tried improving the relationship in relation to the use of the Massacre Hard Court, it has always been a problem, in addition to the court not being marked appropriately.

The DABA President says he remembered when the Windsor Park was active they collected gate receipts of over $40,000 which in turn enabled them to not rely so much on the government, but since the new Windsor Park Stadium has no area for basketball it is a disadvantage to them.

Mr. Joseph added that right now they are planning the Sugar Creole Basketball Festival which is scheduled for October 12th-14th but with no venue to raise funds it is going to be very difficult and will have to seek sponsorship from all businesses possible.

He is urging all business owners to support the DABA by sponsoring sporting activities planned by the organization.
