Defendant cautioned to buy a ‘flashlight phone’ if he cannot afford a Blackberry

‘If you cannot afford a Blackberry, buy a flashlight phone!’

These were the words of Magistrate Candia George, after she slapped Kitz Vidal of Massacre, who he pleaded guilty to theft of a Blackberry phone at the Roseau Magistrate’s court last week with a $2049 fine.

Since this was the third time that Vidal has broken the law, for the same offence, Magistrate George sent a strong message to him, saying that if he appears before the court again, she will not think twice of imposing a custodial sentence.

The twenty-year-old admitted to stealing the Blackberry phone at his workplace, where the virtual complainant was having a staff dinner, at the time.

He was ordered to pay the court $1000 by March 31st, 2011 in addition to a compensation fee of $1049 to the virtual complainant, to be paid by January 31st, 2011.

If he fails to pay both fines, he will serve four months at the Dominica State Prison.

Meanwhile, Hezroy Prince was remanded at the Dominica State Prison, awaiting bail after a charge of grievous bodily harm was filed against him, following an incident in Roseau on Christmas Eve.

Disclosure into this matter is to be made by March 31st, 2011, while the trial is scheduled for May 23rd, 2011.
