Did You Know: The first CD pressed in the United States was Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” ?

bruce Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA has been celebrated as the first compact disc pressed in the United States — but there’s a catch. Born in the USA might be better described as the first commercial CD pressed in the United States. Bruce’s was the first CD (or more accurately, first U.S. CD) to roll off the manufacturing line at the Digital Audio Disc Corporation in 1984 along with the Edison CD Sampler, a promotional CD of Thomas Edisons recordings.

The first CD ever to hit the consumer market, however, was thanks to Billy Joel, not Bruce Springsteen. Billy Joel’s 52nd Street was released in 1982 to the consumer market in Japan.

The band ABBA beat both Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel to the punch. The world’s first compact disc was ABBA’s The Visitors, also in 1982, and was manufactured in Germany.

The superior digital sound quality scratch-free set the stage for the extinction of vinyl records and cassettes. As of this writing, more than 200 billion CDs have been sold around the world.
