Dominica boxers training to qualify for London 2012 Olympics

Dominicans may soon be glued to their tv sets, not for just watching the 2012 London Olympics but to support their own countrymen at the staging of the International event.



Three Dominicans, 27 year old Hewlett Lucien, 27 year old Lenon Bannis and 34 year old Rowain Christopher are all currently in The United Kingdom, going through intense training in preparation for the qualification process.



Mr. Hewlett Lucien is in the Welter Weight category, Mr. Lenon Bannis is in the Light Heavy Weight category while Mr. Rowain Christopher is in the Middle Weight category.

In an exclusive BBC News documentary on two of the boxers, Mr. Christopher says he is looking forward to representing his country proudly.



The boxers have taken up accommodation in the home of a boxing fan Mr. Andrew Pettey, where he provides them with all what they need during the training process.


Speaking with the Secretary General of the Dominica Olympic Committee, Mr. Thomas Dorsette says, from training in The United Kingdom, the boxers will then travel to Brazil to qualify for the Olympics.



He also said there is one athlete Mr. Erricson Hurtalt which has have qualified for the Olympics, and three others who will be trying to qualify also.


The Dominicans will be trying to qualify for competitions such as the long jump, high jump and boxing.
