Dominica launches a ten (10) year Strategic Health Plan

 

The Ministry of Health officially launched its Strategic Health Plan under the theme “Investing in health – building a safer future.”

 

The four-volume document which highlights the challenges that are currently being faced within the health sector and sets out new directions for the system over the next ten (10) years, was launched at the Fort Young Hotel, on Wednesday November 24th, 2010.

 

The ten year (10) year plan provides a framework for all partners in the health system to link their policy decisions and investments to health outcomes, and outlines five strategic directions which provide the overarching framework for action on health which are Population Health, Determinants of Health, Health Systems, Health Services and Resources for Health.

 

Dr. Gabriel Vivas, Representative from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) said that PAHO is pleased to have provided both financial and technical assistance for the preparation of this plan.

 

He said “there is absolutely no doubt that the National Health Plan will facilitate mechanisms and strategies for the delivery of quality health care in Dominica.”

 

Minister of Health Honourable Julius Timothy who described the plan as an effective tool said that it is consistent with the broader social policy directions of the government, as expressed in the medium-term Growth and Social Protection Strategy.

 

“It is a plan that will guide all interventions by all parties, at all levels of the health system in Dominica,” explained Mr. Timothy.

 

Meanwhile, Prime Minister of Dominica Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit said that this is a clear indication that the health sector is poised to be moving to the next level.

 

“I welcome the launch of this new strategic plan for health which offers a practical approach to strengthening the health system and will ensure greater mechanism for improved user satisfaction of the services provided,” said Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit as he endorsed the plan.

 

The strategic plan for health was compiled by Dominica’s health officials and other individuals from both the public and private sectors.
