Dominica Reading Association Embarks on Initiatives to Encourage Reading
The Dominica Reading Association (DRA) recently held its first general meeting for the year, for members and prospective members, during which the association – focused on increasing reading on the Island – announced two activities that sought to encourage reading among citizens.
These two activities are titled ‘Lit and Lunch’ and ‘Reading in Queue’.
At the Lit and Lunch carded for March 27, 2014, various authors including writers and poets will display and recite their work at the Public Library in Roseau.
Participants and guests will have an opportunity to engage with the authors.
The ‘Reading in Queue” programme, scheduled for the last Friday in April, seeks to encourage members of the public to read, while standing in line at various business organizations.
According to board member, Ms. Chinda Byno, the activities are to encourage the culture of reading.
Meanwhile, featured speaker, Dr. Schuyler Esprit says reading should be introduced as more than a skill.
According to Dr. Esprit, we must first distinguish leisure reading from formal reading, as this could lead to the art becoming more exciting and inviting.
The DRA has just begun to formulate its activities and is expected to announce more events later this year.
