Dominica Receives Humanitarian Aid from Kingdom of Morocco

footage (1)Dominica received a shipment on Friday, January 17, 2014, of humanitarian aid from the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco.

The shipment included a supply of basic food items, medication and blankets.

This humanitarian aid is in response to the Christmas Eve trough system which caused devastation to the southern part of Dominica.

Prime Minister Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit welcomed the assistance from Morocco.

Mr. Skerrit also confirmed that Morocco will provide financial assistance to Dominica for rehabilitation and mitigation works, following the damage caused by the trough system.

Heavy and continuous rainfall on December 24, 2013 caused major damage, concentrated in the Roseau South and Roseau Valley constituencies.

The total clean-up cost was estimated at eight hundred and thirty thousand dollars and included clearing of roads, ravines and drains, and dredging of rivers.

Rehabilitation of infrastructure and mitigation was estimated at forty-five million dollars.

The Cabinet of Dominica on Friday, December 27, 2013, took a decision to provide financial assistance to those affected by the trough system and following assessment by the relevant Government departments, those affected have already began to receive the assistance promised by the Government of Dominica.
