Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation Says it is Equipped to Handle Garbage for The Festivities

This creole season, the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) is asking all Dominicans to play their part in helping to keep their communities clean.

This year the DSWMC is pushing their theme, the 3 R’s, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and say that this is the only way forward for a sustainable Dominica.

During the festive times, Dominicans receive items from abroad, and this is one of the reasons why there is such an accumulation of garbage at these times.

This causes a lot of waste to be generated and we need to dispose of it properly.

He says ways in which the general public can help is to reuse their waste material.

One example that he gave was the reusing of cardboard boxes to store other items or even create compost.

The corporation is involved in recycling items like tins, plastics and bottles, and has started pilot programs in the Elmshall, Bath Estate area.

It has since expanded the program to the Goodwill area, and they are looking to export these items to other countries where it is then processed.

Mr. Jacobs says that the corporation has been working with the Dominica Festivals Committee over the years, to keep the garbage that is being accumulated to a minimum and be disposed of quickly.

Mr. Jacobs emphasizes that this is the only way we can all help to manage the amount of garbage we accumulate at any time of year.
