Dominica Solid Waste Partners with Village Councils to Better Implement the 3 Rs
The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) is working with village councils around the Island, to help education their villagers on proper disposal of organic matter.
This stems from certain areas in Dominica, which are a bit problematic due to persons not adhering to the warnings of the Corporation and insist on putting compostable matter with matter that should go to the landfill.
Public Relations Officer of the DSWMC, Mr. Jeno Jacobs, says that over fifty percent of the waste that comes to the landfill is organic matter that should stay in people’s back yards and not end up at the landfill.
On November 21st, the corporation planned to meet with the Portsmouth Town Council to address similar issues there. Mr. Jacobs hopes that the meeting would bring about change in that community, where individuals would adhere to the rules of proper garbage disposal.
In the areas where waste is not being disposed of properly, Mr. Jacobs says that not only is it necessary to meet with the village council, but to find the perpetrators of the act and guide them as to how to do it in the right way.
The corporation is asking those who are doing the job right, to assist the communities that are struggling.
At the end of the day it is all in an effort to keep Dominica clean, green and eco- friendly.
