Dominica State College Journalism Club Host Political Forum
It was an unforgettable day on Thursday April 3rd 2014, as the two major political parties in Dominica, the United Workers Party and the Dominica Labour Party, went head on in a political forum on the topic “The Promise of the National Economy; A Hope for the Youth.”
Speaking first on the topic, Public Relations Officer of the Dominica Labour Party, Dr. Philbert Aaron presented the argument that, the Government has over the last 14 years, been making investments in Institutions and policies that ensure creativity and innovation among the youth and in the economy of Dominica.
He also noted when the present Government came into power in 2002; they had to stabilize the economy from large debt.
After some worthy debate, Dr. Aaron suddenly began to accuse Leader of the United Workers Party, Mr. Lennox Linton, of not being able to provide his curriculum vitae to the public, stating it made no sense to entrust the economy of Dominica to such an individual.
In response, UWP Candidate for the Roseau South Constituency, Mr. Joshua Francis said, Dr. Aaron’s attack on Mr. Linton is the type of politics that the Dominica Labour Party is involved in.
Contrary to statements by Dr. Aaron, Mr. Francis believes Dominica has an economy that lacks innovation, a dying private sector and a blooming public sector that is not helping the economy.
He stated, those who study Economics know very well that in any country where the public sector is the largest employer there will always be a negative effect on the economy.
The United Workers Party he said, have identified the main economic drivers in Dominica in their quest to renew the economy and will pay special attention to agriculture, tourism, information technology services, finance, construction and renewable energy to name a few.
The forum was organized by the Dominica State College’s Journalism.
