The Commonwealth of Dominica is among eight Caribbean Community countries, (CARICOM) to benefit from US$3 billion concessionary loans from the Government of China.

This was made public when China’s President, Xi Jingping, met with regional leaders following a three day visit to Trinidad and Tobago.

The loans would be used for infrastructure and development projects in the member state countries.

President Jingping who met with the Prime Minister of Dominica, Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit says there is a good relationship between Dominica and China working closely together.

Prime Minister Skerrit stated, this loan from China is very good news for the Caribbean people and Governments of the Caribbean.

“It signals China’s continued interest in the Caribbean because often times we are regarded as small countries, specks of sand in the Caribbean in the Caribbean Sea,” he said.

“For China to regard the Caribbean so seriously speaks volumes on the manner China views small islands states, because China has been a champion of small island states for a very long time,” Mr. Skerrit went on to say.

China has shown they are not all about talk, and are manifesting seriousness in a practical way.
