Dominica welcomes the MV AZURA to its port

Dominica welcomed yet another Cruise ship to its port, when the MV AZURA made its inaugural call to the island on Wednesday January 5th, 2011.

Chief Executive Officer of Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) Mr. Collin Piper says the authority looks forward to welcoming the cruise again during its many calls to the island.

Representative of the Ship’s agent; Whitchurch Shipping Mrs Kira Aird says it is a great honor to welcome a grand class ship; the MV AZURA, to Dominica’s shores.

According to her, the ship’s modified design distinguishes it from the early ships of the same class that were being operated by its sister company Princess Cruises.

Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Honourable Ian Douglas told the crew that there is absolutely no doubt that Dominica offers the most unique destination to cruise passengers, as he boast of the island’s many attributes.

He says he looks forward to a long and fruitful relationship that will be beneficial to both parties as they seek to expand the cruise industry.

Meanwhile, Captain of the MV AZURA Paul Dowds says he is privilege to be the very first Captain to bring the AZURA; a wonderful addition to the P&O Cruises fleet into a fantastic destination and that he looks forward to many more calls in the future.

Construction of AZURA began in 2008 when her keel was officially laid on October 27th, 2008. A ceremonial float out was held on Friday June 26th, 2009, in which she was blessed by a priest.

This was followed by the formal transfer of the vessel to P&O Cruises on Friday March 26th, 2010.

Shortly thereafter, Azura began her maiden voyage on March 31st, 2010, when she departed from the shipyard en route to Southampton. She later arrived in the United Kingdom on April 7th, 2010, before she began her Cruise with passengers on April 12th, 2010.
