Dominicans Urged to Take Care of Roads Provided by Government

Minister of Public Works, Energy and Ports, Honourable Rayburn Blackmoore, is urging Dominicans to ensure that they take care of the roads provided by the Government.

The Government recently spent close to three million dollars rehabilitating feeder roads, and an additional forty million dollars, will be dispensed for additional works to be carried out on more feeder roads.

“I think having done the road it has to be followed with a system of education, where we would impress on our farmers the need to come together to do some basic maintenance to clear debris.”

Mr. Blackmoore noted, a growing problem which needs to be resolved, is the number of road side mechanic shops emerging in various places.

“That is totally unacceptable,” stressed Mr. Blackmoore.

When this practice is followed it causes a lot of problems for the road users and also destroys the road and is an obstruction to traffic flow.

“The Ministry of Public Works, Energy and Ports have written to the police and the relevant agencies to impress the need on them for us to work together to get rid of these road side mechanic shops.”

“We also have a number of motorists parking all over the place, other than what the road was built for, causing an obstruction to vehicular traffic, these people need to be mindful that there are other motorists and road users.”

He said, this is something that requires a holistic approach to resolve, not just by Government but by the citizens of this country.

“It is one thing to have proper roads, but we have to ensure that we use them properly,” he concluded.
