Education Minister says Government’s Efforts to Improve Education in Dominica Working
Minister of Education, Honourable Petter St. Jean says, Dominicans have embraced and have been taking advantage of the higher education opportunities made available, under the Dominica Labour Party led Government.
He made the statement during the House of Parliament’s session on Wednesday March 19th 2014.
He noted that at all levels; Dominican citizens are persisting longer in one level of schooling or another and attaining higher levels of education.
This, he said is shown in the significant increase in educational achievements among the population.
In 2001, national statistics showed, the number persons attaining GCE (General Certificate of Examination) or CXC (Caribbean Examination of Councils Certificates) stood at 4958, however in 2011 the total number increased to 6370.
This 28.5 percent increase he says vindicates the efforts of Government and other stakeholders in increasing access to Universal Secondary Education.
The Minister said, through a variety of efforts, Dominica over the past decade, has become an increasingly supportive environment in which, pupils and students have found a nurturing atmosphere, to develop their God given talents for their own betterment and that of their families, communities and country.
He went on to say, the dramatic rise in persons attaining Associate Degrees speaks to the success of the Dominica State College in its mission to provide tertiary education services, that responds to the needs of this country.
