Experts to Survey Citrus Greening Disease
Two agricultural experts from Florida will be in Dominica to do a survey on the extent of the citrus greening disease on the Island.
The disease which is also known as Huanglongbing (HLB) originated in Asia and was diagnosed in Dominica in January of this year.
Mr. Ryan Anselm, Head of the Plant Protection Quarantine Unit, says that because of the seriousness of the disease the Ministry of Agriculture has joined forces with CARDI to try to combat the disease.
Though the disease has not been intercepted island-wide, the Ministry has formed an action plan to manage the disease by eliminating all infested trees.
Mr. Anselm is urging farmers that whenever they see infested trees they should call the nearest extension officers immediately.
The experts will be on Island from the 2nd to the 8th of December 2012, to train extension and plant health officials in the management of the disease and the vector.
They will also look at our action plan and provide technical assistance to improve the management strategies.
Citrus is very important to the GDP of Dominica and we need to keep the industry alive; for our own consumption and for export.
