Ganga farmer charged over half a million dollars

One man who claimed that he is a ‘ganga farmer’ was ordered by Magistrate Ossie Lewis to pay $100,000 forthwith to the court or he could spend eight months in prison.

Russel Vigilante of Grand Bay appeared before the court where he pleaded guilty to cultivation of 3,668 cannabis trees and possession of cannabis.

Vigilante was charged after police found the drugs on his farm while conducting bush patrols in the Grandbay area on July 28th, 2011.

According to the prosecution, the drugs weighed approximately 611 pounds.

While Vigilante was expected to pay $100,000 forthwith, he stands the risk or serving an additional two year jail term if remaining $511,000 is not paid by January 31st, 2012.

He received no separate penalty for possession of cannabis.
