Government to Meet Full Operating Cost of Alpha Centre
During the opening ceremony of a week of activities to mark the 40th anniversary of the Alpha Centre on Monday June 23rd 2014, Prime Minister Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit said, the Government will meet the full operating cost of the Institution.
The Centre has withstood the test of time solely on donations from beneficiaries, in addition to the Catholic Church and the Government.
“I want to say to the Alpha Centre that come September the challenges which you had in putting together the resources to operate this very important institution will be a thing of the past,” said the Prime Minister.
He said as Minister of Finance he will ensure that in the upcoming budget will include the full operating cost of the Alpha Centre.
The Prime Minister noted, this will go on for as long as the Institution is operating in Dominica.
He added, the Government will also provide a transportation grant for all students of the school and a uniform allowance for the students in the next budget.
Meanwhile, Board Member of the special needs school, Jean Jacob stated, over the past 40 years, the Alpha Centre has recognized that the needs of children with limitations are no different from any other children although the degree may vary.
She noted, the focus of the Institution has been to ensure affection and interest and to help the students achieve emotional, physical and spiritual maturity.
Some of the activities to commemorate the school’s 40th anniversary include a school mass, open day events, an exhibition, and a panel discussion.
The week of activities will come to an end on Friday June 27th with a fund raising dinner at the Goodwill Parish Hall from 7:30 pm.
