Grandbay Primary School wins the 2011 Kweyol spelling bee competition
Kandace Pond of the Grandbay Primary School is the winner of the 2011 Kweyol spelling bee competition.
Kandace amassed the most points from a field of nine finalists, at the finals which was staged at the Arawak House of Culture on May 17th, 2011.
Lillishia Angol of the St Luke’s Primary School came in second while Fanestha Angol of the St Joseph Primary School came in third.
The event was organized by the Cultural Division and the Komite Pou Etid Kweyol (KEK), and formed part of activities marking Domfesta 2011, in Dominica.
Chief Cultural Officer, Mr Raymond Lawrence says the competition, which is expected to be an annual event, is aimed at encouraging students to read and speak the Creole language.
Senior Education Officer in the curriculum, measurement and evaluation unit of the Ministry of Education, Mr Nicholas Goldberg says that his ministry is pleased with the hosting of this event, one that promotes a significant part of Dominica’s culture.
The other finalists were Allysha Joseph of the Atkinson Primary School, Prisca Daisma of the Goodwill Primary, Nekel Roberts of the Grandfond Primary, Brigitte Lavab of the Mahaut Primary, Justlyn Ferrol of the Paix Bouche Primary and Bakquar Frederick of the Salybia Primary School.
Two Kweyol publications entitled ‘Mi Bredeks’ and ‘Ti Listwe Domnik’ were also launched on Tuesday.
Copies of the publications were presented to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education.
