Health and Safety Press Conference
PDV Petro Caribe Dominica Limited has recognized April 28th 2014 as World Health and Safety Day and has dubbed the month of May Health and Safety Month.
Every year, on April 28th, the International Labour Organisation celebrates World Health and Safety Day in the workplace, aimed at bringing awareness to all industries of the various health and safety issues that affect workers around the globe.
Ian Pinard, Sales and Marketing Manager at PDV Caribe Dominica Limited, highlighted the company’s success in hosting the event, announcing that it is the company’s third annual observance under the theme ‘Think Safety; Act safely’.
Activities throughout the month include; training of staff in defensive driving, emergency and evacuation as well as stress management.
The National Health Safety Council has also been contracted to conduct a three day workshop on hazard analysis and risk assessment.
A health exposition and health and safety workshops in four communities across the island are among activities planned for the month-long observance.
In addition, an exposition which will allow members of the public to receive free eye tests, blood pressure and sugar checks and massages, will be held at the Lime Sports Centre in Canefield on May 3, 2014 at 4:00 PM.
Pinard said Petro Caribe continues to put safety as a major priority.
Meanwhile, Kendel Austrie, Health, Safety and Security Officer at PDV Petro Caribe said safety must begin with a “mentality” in order to grow into a habit. A concept that Denis Charles, Human Resource Manager at the company agrees with.
She says the goal is to encourage a ‘posh’ mentality among employees.
“What we mean by posh is to Promote Occupational Safety and Health and in order to become posh, you first have to think posh, you first have to think that your life has no cost to it, it is extremely valuable to you and the life of other people”, Charles said.
Activities will begin with Hazard Analysis on April 30th 2014.
