High seas causes damage to the Dominica Coast Guard and DSWMC Barge

Scores of people gathered near the cliff in Fond Cole earlier this afternoon following failed attempts in an operation to secure one of Dominica’s coast guard boats and a barge, which apparently drifted as a result of high seas.

Reports indicated that both vessels were previously anchored at the customs area at Woodbridge Bay, but slowly drifted following high seas over the weekend brought on by Hurricane Earl as it made its way through to the Leeward Islands.

A few onlookers described the incident as ‘careless’ adding that appropriate measures should be taken since last week after weather officials issued an advisory warning of increased sea levels.

In the interim, personnel are standing by to safely secure both vessels as soon as the high currents cease.

The coast guard vessel is the property of the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force while the barge belongs to the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation, which is normally used to transport recycled waste material.
