Plans for cruise port development at the Canefield Airport site are being considered.

Honourable Rayburn Blackmoore, Minister of Public Works, Energy and Ports made the statement at an emergency meeting on May 9th 2014.

We’re seeing significant improvement in our cruise tourism, he said.

To improve the capacity and accommodate mega cruises talks have been geared towards transforming the airport into a cruise port. An American and a Canadian company have already taken interest in the project, Blackmoore said.

The Minister also dismissed claims of drilling to the Boiling Lake in the Valley of Desolation, stating that Environmentalist Atherton Martin’s comments are aimed at derailing the geothermal project initiated by the Government of Dominica.

The Minister however, gave his reassurance that the Government will continue to follow the best practices involved in the geothermal industry and said that the Government has been able to contract the best talents in the world to work on the sciences involved in geothermal development.

The Minister said the drill rig does not have the capacity to dig that far.

Blackmoore also revealed plans of a Development Unit, stating further that every aspect of the project is being executed by way of precision.

“We’re going to see the shift from a mere management unit within the Ministry to what they call a Development Unit”, the Minister said.

In addition he reiterated plans to commence work for an international airport.
