ICT For Girls Day
International Girls in ICT was celebrated as in Dominica on April 26th. It was recognized as a day designated by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The ITU is the telecommunication arm of the United Nations. The activities were planned as a result of Resolution 70 of the ITU focusing on girls in ICT and how ICT can impact girls.
The week of activities planned have been postponed to a later date due to the cricket matches being held at the Windsor Park Stadium.
One of the key activities being done is engaging the secondary schools by ensuring that they carry out activities that highlighted career opportunities.
Particular attention was paid to the Convent High School, Wesley High School and the St. Martin Secondary Schools as the only girls schools on the island.
Mr.Abraham Durand, ICT Coordinator of the Ministry of Telecommunications says that there is a need to promote ICT in the female gender as the organizers noticed, in the preparation for the events that female exemplars in the sector were a scarcity.
During an interactive discussion with female students he said that they pointed out certain reasons for women’s aversion to ICT.
All schools were encouraged to invite individuals to invite persons involved in ICT to speak to the girls at the schools to enhance them with the different aspects of ICT and benefits of ICT.
The main celebrations were postponed to May and will culminate on May 17th which is recognized as International Telecommunication and Information Security Day, the theme of which is ‘Women and Girls in ICT’.
