Kiwanis Kids on Wheels

On Sunday 26th August, the Kiwanis Club of Waitukubuli (KCW) in collaboration with the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), hosted its first ever Kids on Wheels.

Kids on Wheels are designed to encourage road safety especially in riding of non-motorised wheeled vehicles and geared towards young persons aged three to sixteen.

The activities included straight races, relay races and obstacle races.

Sponsored by Digicel, J. Astaphan and Co. Ltd, and Safe Cycle Centre, it was a fundraiser for the club.

President of the club, Ferney Detouche was slightly disappointed by the turn out.

She was happy that the weather held up as the country experienced some bad weather over the last week and had been expecting more weather systems to follow Tropical Storm Isaac.

She feels that the overcast skies kept some prospective patrons away.

One young boy said he had fun! He just wished there were more people to race with.

Another participant said he had a good time at the Bay front and was glad he won a prize!

Secretary of the club, Andrea Louis wished that there had been greater participation by those present.

She says  ”people turned out. I am happy that they did. It was, however, challenging getting some of the older riders to pay the $1.00 fee to enter an official race where they had a chance to win prizes,”.

They hope to make this an annual event and implore the public to continue to support future projects of the Kiwanis Club of Waitukubuli.
