During a recently concluded Sound Engineering workshop, President of the Association of Music Professionals, Mr. McCarthy Marie, encouraged young ladies to get more involved in the field.

The workshop, which was the first of its kind, introduced thirty six participants (36) to standard development and certified training in engineering.

According to Mr. Marie, it is not a field that is exclusively open to males and encouraged the young ladies to just “start doing it”.

He advised them to start by joining small local bands to build their portfolio.

Statistics show that women count for less than five percent of producers and engineers around the world.

Meanwhile, Workshop Facilitator, Mr. Basil Lai of Basil Lai Entertainment Ltd encouraged the participants to be diverse in their decisions and to know who they are and what they need to become successful in the business.

If you know your talent is in the creative he stated, find those persons that you can connect with that have the ability to build that into an entrepreneurial or some sort of skill set that leverages creative ability.

“Don’t act in a silo, don’t be creative and not be able to earn a living off of it”, he said.

It is hoped that more workshops will be conducted to further the trade.

The workshop was a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Employment, Trade, Industry and Diaspora Affairs, the Association of Music Professionals and the Dominica Coalition of Service Industries.
