Launch of Virgin Coconut Oil Project
The Believers Multi-Purpose Cooperative society Ltd launched their Virgin Coconut Oil Project on Sunday November 18th, 2012.
Seven years ago the Cooperative began to process virgin coconut oil.
They received a $5000 grand from the Cooperative Division to purchase a grinder.
President of the Believers Multipurpose Cooperative Mr. Adrien Bannis, says the demand for the oil continued to grow while the production remained limited due to lack of equipment and a suitable plant.
He says this has been a great success for the people of the north east, mainly because the banana and plantain farmers continue to experience increased input prices.
He hopes that the board and members of the Cooperative use the project as a sustainable income generator to the farmers, as contribution to the Gross Domestic Product of Dominica.
Ms. Agnes Esprit, National Coordinator of the GEF Small Grants Project extends congratulations to the Cooperative on the award of a $38,000 grant towards the Virgin Coconut Oil Project.
The Believers Multipurpose Cooperative has been given 1 year to implement the project and Ms. Esprit hopes that they will also reduce negative environmental social impacts on natural resources and the community.
The uses of coconut are wide including nourishing of healthy hair and skin and lowering bad cholesterol levels and increasing the good ones.
