Lennox Linton says the UWP Will Continue Relations with China If Elected as Government

Amid conflict of a no-show by Opposition (UWP) United Workers Party members, Mr. Lennox Linton, Party Leader, insists that under his party’s regime they will seek to continue relations with China.

The conflict arose when the party did not show for a cocktail reception at the new State House organized to celebrate the 10th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The UWP blamed negligence and lack of prompt distribution of invitations by the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) while advocates of the DLP claimed it was as a result of the UWP’s “usual immature behaviour”.

This in turn, caused wide spread dispute surrounding the reason for the no show.

Mr. Linton felt however that the responsibility to ensure timely invitations rested on the Prime Minister, Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit, noting that this attempt will not stop the UWP from marrying continued ties with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) if they are elected into power.

“There are no intentions at this time, as has been contrary to what is being suggested, to end diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China”, he said.

Mr. Linton pledged that under the United Workers Party government the people of Dominica will witness greater benefits from relations with China.

He added there will be some changes in policies with China; however, he would not entirely contest aid from the PRC.

He is of the belief that Dominica is in a position to work effectively with the PRC, noting that his government has a serious problem with the way the DLP (Dominica Labour Party) runs the foreign affairs of the country.

“We are driven by a focus on trade as opposed to an obsession on aid”, he said.

Mr. Linton concluded saying that his regime will simply move away from unfitting practices.
