Mervin Charles Sentenced to 12 Months in Prison
One man will have some time to think of his actions, after he was sentenced to 12 months in prison on Thursday February 21st 2013 by Magistrate Candia George, at the Roseau Magistrate’s Court, following his guilty plea to theft and malicious damage.
Following the discovery of a damaged door and items missing on February 29th 2013 by a supervisor at Miniya’s 7-11 Minimart, the police was called to investigate.
During the investigations, the investigating officer met with Mervin Charles who resides at Roseau, who confessed to the crime when questioned.
According to the facts of the case, Charles damaged a wooden door and an iron gate to gain entry into the Supermarket at about 2:00 am on Monday January 28th, where he stole six 200 milliliter bottles and 12 700 milliliter bottles of Appleton White Rum.
The value of the items is $288.64.
In mitigation at Court, Charles stated that he is going through a trend in life; however he does not want to make any excuses for his actions.
He revealed that he went to a rehabilitation programme, which was good for him, as for the last two years and four months he has been out of trouble, until now, but drugs affected his judgment.
Magistrate George advised Charles to get help for another rehabilitation programme when released, so he can do something meaningful with his life and stop being a repeat offender.
