Michael Astaphan is Freedom Party’s Acting Leader as Judith Pestaina Steps Down
Things may soon change for one political party as there has been a shift of power.
At a press conference held on Tuesday October 30th, the power shift was made resulting in Mrs. Judith Pestaina bowing out as the leader of the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP).
The position made vacant by Mrs. Pestaina is being filled by Mr. Michael Astaphan, until someone is officially elected at an upcoming DFP delegates conference.
Mrs. Pestaina says she made the decision because she thought it was good timing as she believes the party can have sufficient time to prepare for the next general elections due in 2014.
She said she will not be contesting any constituency on a DFP ticket during the next general elections, but pledged her continued support for the party.
The former freedom party leader urged citizens, particularly politicians, to put the country first and implored on young people to play a greater role in nation building.
She also encouraged them to get involved in politics.
Acting Political Leader Mr. Michael Astaphan along with other members of the party’s executive extended best wishes and gratitude to Mrs. Pestaina for her contribution to the DFP.
Mr. Astaphan pointed out that Mrs. Pestaina was a real champion of the cause for electoral reform during her tenure as leader of the Freedom Party.
Mr. Astaphan said the DFP is seeking to present an alternative on what to do in agriculture, tourism, employment, while focusing on the young people in Dominica.
He added the freedom party have tremendous challenges to get supporters andto educate people, but he thinks by educating people they can get them to understand what the party stood for in the days of Eugenia Charles.
General Secretary of the Freedom Party Mr. Johnson Boston said their focus is now being placed on the country.
Mr. Boston added their major focus is communicating with people leading towards their delegates’ convention where they can have a political leader in place to take the party forward, although the political arena has changed.
There are currently a number of prominent persons interested in the leadership of the party which was indicated by its members.
