The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports through the Sports Division held its 2nd Women’s & Girls Sports Festival on Sunday, March 17th, 2013 at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth in its quest in getting the Dominican public, especially women, involved in physical activity.
Hundreds of women competed in volleyball, football, rounders and cricket, however due to insufficient time and the number of matches yet to be played – netball, track and basketball had to be postponed to another date.
Some of the teams which participated in Sunday’s event were: St. Joseph, Layou, Roseau Youth Olympic Movement, Ross University Team, Marigot Colours, Kalinago Territory United and Vieille Case among others.
Kalinago Territory United and Layou were adjudged joint champions in Rounders; Breakers from Portsmouth won Volleyball, Ross University won Cricket while Jazz from Roseau won football.
The Sports Division extends thanks to all the participants and spectators who turned out in large numbers to support women in sports and for the fun and cooperative atmosphere they created.
The Division looks forward to the continuity of this event and hopes that it will grow from strength to strength, even as we seek to create a more active culture of sport and physical activity on island.
