Ministry of Health Observes Vaccination Week
The Ministry of Health through its Primary Health Care Services, will from April 26th to May 3rd, 2014, observe Vaccination Week of the Americas (VWA), under the slogan, “Vaccination: Your best shot.”
This slogan was chosen to encourage people of the Americas to protect themselves and the Region against the importation of polio, measles, and other vaccine-preventable diseases, in the context of the upcoming 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Honourable Julius Timothy feels that in light of the upcoming World Cup in Brazil, stress must be placed on getting persons immunized.
According to the Minister, importation of preventable diseases is a real threat.
He said, although Dominica has been privileged to achieve the eradication of diseases such as polio, Measles and Rubella through high levels of immunization, these viruses are still circulating.
“Despite such successes in immunization, there continues to be some communities where our children have not completed their vaccination schedules. These children continue to be at risk of contracting vaccine-preventable diseases. The treat of reintroduction and importation of any of these diseases is of great concern”, he reiterated.
The Ministry of Health is urging all persons who have not been adequately vaccinated to report to their Health Centres to receive immunization.
An appeal is also being made to the Haitian Community to visit the nearest health center.
Additionally, persons travelling to Brazil for the World Cup are requested to ensure that they are immunized against Measles and Polio in particular.
