The Ministry of Education announced its achievement in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, with an overall success rate of 74.7 percent and a total of 42 students obtaining six grade ones and above.

However Honourable Petter St. Jean is concerned about students’ performance for mathematics, although there was slight improvement from 27 percent in 2012 to 36 percent in 2013.

Mr. St. Jean added that Mathematics remains a sore point for the Ministry of Education and is given special attention.

According to Mr. St. Jean approximately EC$347,000.00 has been spent so far on mathematics resources, and consultancies and training have been provided for five teachers in the subject field at the Bachelor’s degree level, under the enhancement project.

Partnering with these initiatives and taking other measures, the Ministry of Education is hoping that student performances will improve immensely in Mathematics and other subject areas.

The Ministry recognizes that in this new knowledge economy, technical skills have become more valuable, which is why they are strengthening its  offer in technical and vocational education.
