N.E.C.S to Pilot Youth Empowerment Programme

vlcsnap-2014-05-08-17h05m04s22The North East Comprehensive School has been selected to pilot a Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development initiative, entitled “Youth Empowerment Through Sports”.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) sponsored programme seeks to develop literacy and numeracy through sporting activities and strategies.

During the official launching, on Wednesday May 7th 2014, principal of the School, Steve Hypolite, welcomed the project, testifying that the school’s continuous aim is to facilitate innovation and new ideas.

He appealed to the parents to support the programme and to liaise with the school for the advancement of the students.

Sixteen of 116 persons who registered for the project were selected.

One of the main targets of the Ministry is to provide students with the type of environment and programmes that are conducive to successful learning, said Chief Education Officer, Melena Fontaine.

“Many of your teachers are working hard to ensure that your classrooms are productive places where you’re totally engaged and measures are being put in place to ensure that your school environment is a safe place to be and violence is not tolerated, she said.

This project forms part of UNICEF’s focus to aid in the education and health of children and mothers in developing countries.
