Prime Minister of Dominica, the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit, on Wednesday March 5th, accompanied colleague Heads of Government from the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, to Venezuela, where a Military Ceremony was held in honour of late President Hugo Chavez Frias, on the occasion of the 1st anniversary since his untimely death.
The Prime Minister and former Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, were said to have been close allies both in the business world and their personal lives.
After the passing of the Venezuelan President, Prime Minister Skerrit declared a national state of mourning in Dominica in his honour and ordered that all flags be flown at half-mast.
His death triggered a presidential election which was constitutionally obliged to be called within 30 days.
Vice President Nicolas Maduro served as interim president following Chávez’s death until 14 April, when he was officially elected.
