Participants to Graduate from Backyard Garden Enhancement Programme

farming-300x224On the 26th of June, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will host a Graduation Ceremony for participants of the Backyard Garden Enhancement Programme.

The project which was jointly implemented by the parties received financial support from PAHO and the FAO, and was launched on World Food Day 2013.

The goal of the project was to improve skills in backyard gardening and increase the production and consumption of iron rich foods in the diet.

In 2010, the Ministry of Health conducted a survey to determine the anaemia prevalence and dietary practices among children, pregnant women and women of child-bearing age in the La Plaine health district in Dominica.

Anaemia is a decrease in the number of red blood cells or less than the normal quantity of haemoglobin in the blood.

A moderate public health problem of anaemia was determined among survey participants, that showed 35% prevalence overall.

The highest percentage of anaemia was in Riviere Cyrique with 43.3% followed by Boetica with 40.0%.

As a result, an intervention to address the problem of anaemia was planned which included a backyard garden enhancement project.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the La Plaine Agricultural Centre from 10 a.m.
