Plea for Holistic Education
One young Dominican is making a plea for holistic education in Dominica.
One of the Miss Dominica 2013 Contestants, Ms. Leslassa Armour-Shillingford, says that she strongly believes Dominica should adapt a holistic view of education and incorporate sports, the arts, and philosophy more in-depth in the curriculum.
She says there needs to be that connection between the different subject areas, because they all make sense together.
Ms. Shillingford herself has had this form of education. She grew up in a Montessori style of education.
Montessori education is characterized by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological development, as well as technological advancements in society.
She says there is more to holistic education, but she would like to focus on dance and sports being a greater part of the curriculum and not just an extra-curricular activity.
Her hope is that every child can find their passion and excel at it.
