Prime Minister Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit to Assist Rotary Club of Portsmouth
The Rotary Club of Portsmouth was honored by a recent visit of Prime Minister Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit, on Thursday 3rd April 2014 at one of its regular meetings.
Mr. Skerrit was invited by the Club to discuss ways in which Rotary and Government can partner to work on some much needed projects in and around the north of Dominica.
The Prime Minister congratulated the Club on the numerous projects that are both on-going and completed with special mention of the beautification project ‘Keep Dominica Beautiful’, while stating his intention to purchase some of the signs for his own constituency.
He also informed the group of his particular interest in the sanitation project in Calibishie and committed the government’s support by providing the materials needed which will cost approximately $260,000, with Rotary Club of Portsmouth providing the labour for the project.
This commitment from the government will help facilitate the Club’s request for funding from Rotary International.
The Prime Minister also requested that the Rotary Club of Portsmouth look at projects especially important to him such as “Early Childhood Development and Mentoring.”
This would include teaching basic reading and writing skills and mentoring with children, who need additional tutoring such as remedial reading and supplying teaching and learning materials for the schools.
The Club was also advised to focus on Public Relations and Communication to help raise public consciousness in care for the elderly, drug trafficking and drug prevention, and chronic, non-communicable diseases.
