Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to introduce new legislation to protect children’s welfare
Prime Minister of Dominica and Minister of Finance, Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit has announced his government’s intention to introduce new legislation to protect the rights of children at risk in Dominica.
Mr Skerrit says that while the government will continue to partner with other social agencies on the island, he believes that appropriate laws need to be enacted into the country’s constitution.
He announced that one of the first phases of government’s protection strategy to protect children at risk is to introduce maintenance laws for delinquent fathers.
"The first thing we will do is to put the necessary legislation so that delinquent fathers uphold their responsibilities", says Mr Skerrit.
The Prime Minister also announced that government will not waver in their efforts to bring justice to perpetrators who continue to abuse children and law enforcement agencies.
He reiterated the importance of a community approach in dealing with the issue.
