Renowned Painter & Sculptor to Host Art Festival
Renowned painter & sculptor, Roger Burnett will on Friday June 20th 2014, launch an art festival dubbed, “A New Lease of Life.”
The event which will be held at the Old Mill Cultural Centre will feature a number of activities from June 21st to July 6th.
The launch of the festival will be followed by a book signing on Saturday June 21st and portrait painting on Sunday June 22nd.
“I’m trying to work closely particularly with Kathleen Douglas Murdock from the recently formed Dominica Institute for the Arts, and we’re hoping to eventually to conduct a full time one year course, which will be a pre-degree course which will be a huge breakthrough in allowing students who want to specialize in the Arts,” Burnett explained.
Burnett says, his work has covered a wide cross section of the Caribbean and has also designed postage stamps, in addition to publishing two books about the Caribbean.
He stated, this festival came about with the realization that society does not truly recognize the arts as it should which is just as important as academics.
The artist who migrated to Dominica from the United Kingdom in the 1970’s added, his recent paintings have been inspired by Dominicans and the countries natural attributes.
“I think it’s very important that we give more prominence to all of the Arts, but particularly the visual arts which at the moment is very neglected,” Burnett stressed.
There will be various films being screened, in addition to opportunities to meet the persons in Burnett’s paintings and or sculptures.
Other activities include a panel discussion on June 27th from 7:30 pm, and a sculpture demonstration on June 29th from 2:00 pm, followed by school visits on June 30th from 10:30 am.
