Seminar Brings Hope to Livestock Farmers
Farmers are now more informed and better equipped with knowledge on how to manage their farms, after the East Caribbean Flour Mills Limited, hosted a one day seminar at the Garraway Hotel on Tuesday, 9th April.
The seminar which was attended by approximately 52 farmers, were trained on how to implement new technologies that will enable them to develop their farms.
Mr. John Toussaint, Head of the department of the Agricultural Unit in the Ministry of Agriculture regarded the seminar as one of the best they have had.
Mr. Toussaint said the main hindrance that farmers are faced with in livestock production, is the cost of feeds for the animals.
He said the price of feed is exorbitant and makes up 70 percent of production cost. The high cost of the feed does not encourage farmers to continue investing in live stocks.
The livestock farmers have been advised not to give up on farming, since the Government is in the process of constructing a new abattoir at Layou Park.
The new abattoir, in its first phase after construction will only supply meat for local consumption and the second phase will export to the French islands which have already showed interest.
Mr. Toussaint urged farmers to continue farming as it has many long term benefits such as food security for the Island.
